19-year-old daughter lacks funds for university education, 60-year-old father who has cancer is suffering from painful, family of 4 trapped in a difficult situation, need RM39,000 for tuition fees and medical expenses, seeking public support.

The impoverished student, Liew Qian Yu (19 years old) just entered her university last year, but unfortunately, her father Liew Chuan Meng was diagnosed with rectal adenocarcinoma.

With the main sources of income of the family gone, their savings have been depleted due to cancer treatment costs.

They are seeking to raise the fund of RM38,881 for tuition fees and the medical expenses to save the father’s life.

They are seeking to raise the fund of RM38,881 for tuition fees and the medical expenses to save the father’s life.

Striving to study with the hope to improve the family’s situation

Qian Yu comes from a poor family and she is the youngest daughter.

She recently enrolled in a 2.5-year dual diploma program in Hotel Management (internationally accredited) with the total fee of RM37,000.

However, her father’s is unable to work due to cancer, coupled with the treatment costs, has made their already financially challenged situation even more difficult.

Qian Yu has applied for the maximum PTPTN loan of RM17,000, and the remaining tuition fee of RM20,000 will be paid by instalments which she needs to pay RM666 monthly by her own.

Father’s condition does not improve after electrotherapy

Her father, Liew Chuan Meng (60 years old) has been working as a chef for many years, with the monthly income of RM2,600, barely supporting the family of four.

In July 2022, Liew Chuan Meng started experiencing rectal bleeding, and thr sister Liew Pui Kuan (22 years old) took him to the hospital for an examination, which confirmed the diagnosis of rectal adenocarcinoma.

As concerning about Liew Chuan Meng concurrent coronary artery disease (CAD) and the large size of the tumor, electrotherapy was chosen as the treatment.

Initially, the therapy successfully reduced the size of the tumor, but after the sixth session, the tumor started to grow again, causing unbearable pain and no signs of improvement.

To prevent the risk of infection in the tumor area when feces pass through the rectum, Liew Chuan Meng underwent an open proximal transverse colostomy surgery at the right upper abdomen in late December 2022.

Rectal resection surgery with 1L blood loss, in a danger condition

In March 2023, Liew Chuan Meng underwent tumor resection surgery that need to be done in 3 times due to the large size of the tumor.

During this period, Liew Chuan Meng had admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) twice and almost can’t make it through.

Fortunately, through abdominoperineal resection (colorectal) surgery, the tumor was successfully removed.

However, as a consequence, Liew Chuan Meng now needs to use a stoma bag on the right upper abdomen for bowel movements and can no longer pass stool naturally.

The stoma bag needs to be replaced every 2 to 3 days, costing RM504 per month.

Fundraising for the medical treatment and tuition fees

The mother, Caroline Goh Shan Hwu (51 years old) has a minor stroke 10 years ago, and due to this she has difficulties with language and memory that she is unable to speak a complete sentence and forgets things often.

Although she can take care of herself, but she also requires someone to be present to assist and she is unable to work.

After graduating from secondary school, the older sister Liew Pui Kuan (22 years old) started working as a full-time waitress to support to the family’s expenses.

However, since their father has diagnosed with cancer, Pui Kuan has to go to the hospital frequently to take care of his father.

Due to this, she is forced to switch to part-time job. She can only works once a week, with the meager income of RM 440 per month.

Despite facing difficulties, the whole family still supports Qian Yu in continuing her university education.

Although unable to express it in words, their mother Caroline Goh Shan Hwu nods vigorously with teary eyes, showing her support to her daughter to continue her study in university.

Qian Yu also telling us that she hopes can learn some comprehensive professional knowledge and completing her dual diploma program soonest possible.

She aims to find a higher-pay job after graduation to alleviate the family’s hardship. She also hopes to have the opportunity to contribute back to the society and help those in need in the future.

 

After conducting a home visit and understanding their situation, the Liu family has entrusted us with the full responsibility of launching a fund raising.

We have decided to launch a fundraising campaign in order to raise funds for 19-year-old Liu Qianyu’s university tuition fees, her father Liew Chuan Meng medical expenses, and the cost of stoma bags for the whole next year, a total cost of RM38,881.

The details are as follows:
RM20,000 — 19-year-old Liu Qianyu’s university tuition fees
RM12,833 —father Liu Junming’s medical expenses
RM6,048 — Father’s stoma bags(RM504 x 12months)
